For Liesel, a Gateway-funded clinical trial offered hope for the future after being diagnosed with a brain tumor while in high school.
Liesel participated in a research study being led by Sarah Leary, MD at Seattle Children’s Hospital investigating the safety of ‘tumor paint’, which illuminates the tumor during brain surgery allowing healthy tissue to be spared, helping to make brain surgery more effective. Using Dr. Leary’s innovative ‘tumor paint’ surgeons successfully removed Liesel’s tumor without causing irreversible damage to her brain.
